   Proposal Description:
   The Thal staging system acknowledges up to five phases of amyloid beta deposition in the brain of Alzheimer disease patients based on immunohistochemistry for amyloid beta and including diffuse amyloid plaques. The 2012 National Institute on Aging ??? Alzheimer???s Association neuropathological guidelines for Alzheimer disease implemented this staging system as part of the evaluation of the severity of Alzheimer disease neuropathological change. Here we aimed at: 1) evaluating the contribution of Thal stages to cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer disease and 2) investigating the correlations between Thal stages and other Alzheimer pathologies (neurofibrillary tangles and cerebral amyloid angiopathy) and other frequent concurrent pathologies (Lewy bodies arteriosclerosis, hippocampal sclerosis, etc.).
